空を見上げる少女の瞳に映る世界

Between 2003 and ’04, KyoAni produced an OVA titled Munto, and a sequel, Munto 2: Beyond the Walls of Time. It told of a girl, Hidaka Yumemi, who could see islands floating in the sky. This abnormality of hers is so disturbing to her that she takes to carrying an umbrella outdoors to block out the sky.

Unbeknown to Yumemi, the floating islands are in fact cities of the magical realm. Munto starts with the island cities facing an energy crisis – Akuto, the source of magical power, is running low. In an attempt to conserve as much Akuto as possible, the Heaven Council attacks the Magical Kingdom, the main user of Akuto. In the midst of this, the King of the Magical Kingdom, Munto, sets of to find the girl prophesied to save both the magical world and our world – Yumemi.

The first Munto OVA dealt with Yumemi accepting her fate as the ‘chosen one’, and ended with the restoration of Akuto to the magical world. Unfortunately, with Akuto in abundance, kingdoms started waging war on each other. This leads us to Munto 2, where Yumemi’s powers are once again needed. This time however, Munto is reluctant to ask her for help – he does not want to involve her in the war. When Yumemi gets dragged into it regardless, Munto finally relents, and the 2nd OVA ends with Yumemi going to the magical kingdom with Munto.

Now, after almost five years, KyoAni has finally released a sequel to Munto. They called it 空を見上げる少女の瞳に映る世界 (The World Reflected in the Eyes of the Girl who Looks Up at the Sky), which is insanely verbose. Most people simply call it Munto TV.

The first five and a half episodes of Munto TV is basically a retelling of the two OVAs, with slightly improved art and in widescreen. Having seen the OVA before, I skipped through most of it. Episode 6 finally catches up to where we last saw Yumemi. Upon arrival in the magical realm, Munto and Yumemi are immediately set upon by foes. Munto hands over Yumemi to allies and heads off to fight a rival king. Yumemi herself gets chased by enemy constructs and flees for the Magical Kingdom.

Munto fights back

One thing to note when watching Munto, many of the characters are WMDs in their own right. King Munto himself is capable of taking out an entire horizon of enemy ships with a gesture, and the Outsider, Gass, has the powers of a God. The battles in Munto are breathtakingly epic in scale as well, and beautifully animated. Most of the battles take place in the sky and the action span leagues and leagues. Lasers and magic gets spammed all over. Very nice.

After episode 6, Munto is going into my ‘watch without delay’ list.

Oh, and have I mentioned Leica? She’s a general in the heaven council’s army, and she looks like this:
