Bad end

I finally found time to finish Shikabane Hime last night, and its ending left much to be desired. This and a few other rather bad endings in recent anime is what brings about this rant-ish post.

What do I consider a bad ending? Typically, an ending that leaves major issues hanging, or doesn’t make sense, or doesn’t climax, or one that gets rushed. Here are some examples:

RideBack: This one isn’t a bad ending as much as it is a flat ending. After so much build up and tragedy, we get Rin dancing with her bike. The entire back drop of a BMA’s rebellion against the GGP, as well as Keifer’s revenge, is junked for Rin dealing with her career-ending injury.

What then was the point of the GGP and its cruelties and tyranny?

This one left me feeling very unsatisfied. Like sex without the orgasm.

Shikabane Hime: 24 episodes of fighting the Shichisei, and the show ends with Makina in a battle against Hokuto, the strongest of the bad guys. It doesn’t end with the battle, it ends during the battle. Cliffhanger? For what? The OVA? The next season?

And there’s a whole slew of unanswered questions: what of the Unbroken? What of the Shikabane Himes in the city, who supposedly must have killed more than 108 corpses? Why on earth are they still normal?

Asu no Yoichi: Good anime, just an ending that got rushed. One minute Yoichi is fighting inside the building, the next minute he is magically on the rooftop.

Myself; Yourself: Another good anime that got a rushed ending. Honestly, people remember how you end shows –  that is the thing that really leaves a lasting impression. Cut out one of the filler episodes and add an episode to the final arc, and the show would have been great.

School Rumble (manga): There are a few suitable responses to this ending: 1. WTF were you thinking Kobayashi Jin? 2. Give me back 6 years of my manga reading life.

Suzuka (manga): What started out as a romance cum sports manga, ended with a whimper. Neither Akitsuki nor Suzuka ever achieves anything except teenage pregnancy.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: The mother of all confusing conclusions. Not a single person I know got the ending for the TV series. The movie wasn’t any better. What on earth did Asuka mean when she said ‘気持ち悪い’?

School Days: What can I say? Its a bad end right?

bad ending animes will be held as “future classics”, mindbogglingly ingenious.
